Day 3: Nairobi to Amboseli

After breakfast, start your exploration of this beautiful country as you drive south to Amboseli National Park located at the foot of Africa's highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro. The snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro rises above a saucer of clouds and dominates every aspect of Amboseli. Arrive in time for lunch at your Lodge.  After lunch, you enjoy an afternoon game drive. This park covers only 150 square miles but despite its small size and its fragile ecosystem it supports a wide range of mammals (well over 50 of the larger species) and birds (over 400 species). Years ago this was the locale around which such famous writers as Ernest Hemingway and Robert Ruark spun their stories of big-game hunting in the wilds of Africa. This too, is part of Maasai land, and it’s not unusual to see the proud Maasai warrior or small children tending their cattle as you traverse their territory. In this land, animal and man have learned to coexist and thrive together, despite the harsh conditions. This is also the park that has been made famous by Cynthia Moss, the noted American naturalist and author who has one of the longest-running studies on elephants.

Day 4: Amboseli to Lake Manyara

After breakfast, drive to Namanga, the border between Kenya and Tanzania. Upon completion of border formalities, you will change vehicles and driver-guides and proceed with the drive to Arusha for lunch. After lunch, drive to the beautiful Lake Manyara, a shallow alkaline lake that shimmers in a cleft in the Great Rift Valley. Enjoy an afternoon game drive. A small but uniquely diverse National Park, Manyara is home to the world-famous tree-climbing lions, thousands of flamingoes and nearly 500 species of birds.

Stretching for 50km along the base of the rusty-gold 600-metre high Rift Valley escarpment, Lake Manyara is a scenic gem. From the entrance gate, the road winds through an expanse of lush jungle-like groundwater forest where hundred-strong baboon troops lounge nonchalantly along the roadside, blue monkeys scamper nimbly between the ancient mahogany trees, dainty bushbuck tread warily through the shadows, and outsized forest hornbills honk cacophonously in the high canopy.

Day 5: Lake Manyara to Serengeti

You will make stops at the park authority gates for admission. After a picnic lunch, enjoy an afternoon game drive. Later, drive to your lodge in time to relax and enjoy dinner.

The spectacle of predator versus prey dominates Tanzania’s greatest park. Golden-maned lion prides feast on the abundance of plain grazers. Solitary leopards haunt the acacia trees lining the Seronera River, while a high density of cheetahs prowl the southeastern plains. Almost uniquely, all three African jackal species occur here, alongside the spotted hyena and a host of more elusive small predators, ranging from the insectivorous aardwolf to the beautiful serval cat. But there is more to Serengeti than large mammals. Gaudy agama lizards and rock hyraxes scuffle around the surfaces of the park’s isolated granite kopjes. A full 100 varieties of dung beetle have been recorded, as have 500-plus bird species, ranging from the outsized ostrich and bizarre secretary bird of the open grassland, to the black eagles that soar effortlessly above the Lobo Hills.
