Lake Magadi Birding Tour

US$835 per person sharing - ask us about group discounts

Lake Magadi in southern Kenya is a breeding haven for water birds and migrants between March and June.  This tour makes a perfect Easter weekend but any time in the breeding season we are sure to see plenty of different species, both wet land and dry.

Day 1: Nairobi to Olorgesailie

Early morning pick up from your residence in Nairobi and head straight to Ngong Hills. We take a half day hike from one end to the other to spot the Green-headed Sunbird if we are lucky. Lunch is at the renowned Olepolos Nyama Choma Restaurant overlooking the valley. After lunch we continue to Olorgesailie where there is a Maasai Cultural Museum.

Included meals: Lunch, Dinner

Day 2: Olorgesailie to Nguruman

Enjoy a morning bird walk with our experienced bird guide around the Olorgesailie area, where there are good chances of spotting larks and pipits.  We then continue to Nguruman town.  The Nguruman Escarpment is a different environment, where it is bushier, providing new bird spotting opportunities.

Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Nguruman Escarpment to Lake Magadi

The morning can be spent birding before we head off to Lake Natron.  We drive through Shompole Conservancy before reaching Natron, a massive lake crossing the Kenya-Tanzania border.  As we drive through the conservation area we will be treated to spectacular vistas and also stop for some birding at the lake.  In the late afternoon we make our way up to Lake Magadi.  We camp by the hot springs, where you can take an afternoon stroll into the nearby forest and try your luck spotting some Trogons and Namaco Doves.  The hot springs also invite you for an evening bath.

Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4: Lake Magadi to Nairobi

Arise early in the morning for sunrise and listen to the beautiful birdsong as the day awakens.  Go for a morning bird walk before we start the journey back to Nairobi.  Depending on the road conditions we may have the opportunity to take the back road to Kajiado for an interesting detour home.
